Worship is the heart of who we are in First Church. We gather as people of God to give thanks, to offer praise, and to hear the Word of God read and interpreted. In worship we are challenged to be the women, men and children God calls each of us to be.
For those people whose souls resonate to music with a contemporary sound, we have a service at 8:00 a.m. each Sunday in Bryan Dycus Hall. A wonderful praise band under the direction of Rev. Annelle Ruemmler leads this service. The words to the songs are projected so everyone may enter into the singing. Film clips and skits are used to illustrate God’s word in action in our lives. The atmosphere is very relaxed, but we are quite serious about praising God and hearing God’s word for our lives.
It is our goal at First Church to provide superior learning opportunities for people of every age. Mary Goins is our Director of Christian Education and Children’s Ministry.
In addition to Sunday school classes for everyone from age 3 through 100 there are other ongoing classes, including Disciple Bible Study and short-term topical studies.
Many people prefer a service of hymns, prayers and traditional liturgies. If you are one of these, our 10:30 a.m. service is for you. We believe our Chancel Choir is the finest church choir in Mt. Vernon. Their singing encourages the congregation to join in. Scripture is read, creeds are recited, and the Word of God is expounded week by week.
Children’s Time and Children’s Church are included in the 10:30 service for children up through 5th grade.
The Holy Communion is celebrated bi-monthly in both services. Other services of Holy Communion are held on Maundy Thursday and Christmas Eve.
ACCESSIBILITY
First Church is fully accessible. An elevator with an automatic door opener and a covered entryway is located off the south parking lot. Handicapped parking spaces are also located in the same lot.
